A fourth casino project was approved by the Supreme Court in Arkansas after it was halted in court by a Pulaski County Circuit Court Judge back in January.
Legends Resort and Casino, which is owned and operated by the Cherokee Nation, was told that they could proceed with their casino plans in Russellville, AR. Legends is planning on building a domestic casino resort on 325 acres of land in Russellville, which was initially part of an approved gambling referendum.
Scott Hardin, a spokesman for the Arkansas Racing Commission, stated that casinos were a hot topic when Amendment 100 was first passed in 2018, and it is still a hot topic now. Hardin went on to say that the domestic casino vote set off a firestorm.
The fourth casino license for Russellville was awarded initially to Gulfside Casino out of Mississippi but was then revoked by a court ruling, said Hardin. After the court denied the license, the Arkansas Racing Commission issued a license to Legends Resort and Casino. It has been five years since a casino in Russellville was approved by voters, but the project has been in legal limbo ever since.
When Will The Russellville Casino Break Ground?
Now that the State Supreme Court has approved the project, Legends will likely break ground in the coming months. It only took about a year to build the other three state-licensed casinos, but since the Legends resort is planning on building an amphitheater, a 13-story hotel, and a full casino, it could take longer to complete.
